Search Engine Optimization involves the close examination of the html code of each page of your website. Special words, or "keywords", are selected thru a special process and added to your site. Some are visible on the page, and some are not - they are seen only by search engines, typed directly into the coding of the page.
These keywords and phrases tell the search engine what your site is about. The engines then decide how relevant your site is to a customer's query on its engine.
SEO professionals MAKE SURE the search engine decides your pages are VERY RELEVANT! In other words SEO types make sure you are highly ranked for your pre-selected, pre-researched keywords!
This means your site must be keyworded, submitted to search engines, (and ressubmitted if there have been important changes) and then tracked for placement and ranking. Also, traffic to the site should be analyzed. Generating reports for the site owner and interpreting them is an SEO marketer's job.
Most of this is free, but sometimes paid placement on a few engines is definitely worth it. Directories, particularly, merit this.
